Commercial development takes shape
Cinema, hotel and retail space proposed for west side
Years ago, hotels and other lodging were located on every other corner in Excelsior Springs, and residents caught the latest silver screen offerings at the Beyer or Siloam theaters.
Today, only the Monterey Motel and Elms Resort & Spa offer overnight rooms for travelers, and to see a movie on the big screen residents have to head to any one of a number of nearby communities.

Christmas season kicks off in Excelsior
After Saturday, one thing about Excelsior Springs is clear -- residents of our community love their Christmas season.
For three hours Saturday afternoon, 10 restaurants were kept extra busy by the additional traffic generated by the Progressive Taste of Christmas, a fundraiser for the Excelsior Springs Christmas Committee. No final count on the number of tickets sold to that event was immediately available, but only 350 tickets were being offered, and it appeared that the committee might have reached that threshold.

School board receives audit results
The Excelsior Springs Board of Education received a "clean" audit report at their regular meeting Monday night.
Brad Steele, an audit manager with Westbrook & Co. of Richmond, presented the audit, going through the numbers quickly. He noted that in addition to finding no major issues to report, the audit showed that both revenues and expenditures had been fairly consistent over the past three years -- a sign of a stable school district -- and that ESSD's reserves currently stand at 25.04 percent.

Work halted to address concerns
Any time, workers at the water tower at U.S. 69 and Wornall Road are hoping to hear that the methods they're using to contain the paint particles from the tower are working.
Sandblasting at the tower was halted after parents of students at nearby Westview Elementary School -- as well as employees of the school -- expressed concern about the paint dust being produced at the site.
