Excelsior’s Black leaders and others recognized
Last week we looked at Dee Amos Ellet, who operated the Star Bath House in Excelsior Springs. However, Ellet’s bath house wasn’t the only black bath house in the city.
One couple, William A. Doxey and his wife, Alice (Garnett), operated the Doxey Bath House, located at 254 E. Broadway. A 1917 brochure advertised them as: “Practical bathers, massage treatment, Swedish movement and vapor baths. Treatment given for rheumatism, poor circulation, stomach and liver troubles.”
The couple also serviced white clientele. The book, “Rejuvenation and Renewal,” published in 2006 by the city of Excelsior Springs, printed a copy of a testimonial by one of the Doxeys’ patients: “Having taken treatment of W.A. Doxey – vapor baths and massage – I cheerfully bear testimony to the benefit I received. Mr. Doxey excels, not only in the administration of the baths and manual treatment, but seems to have such an insight into the pathologic condit...
