Gatsby gang shows community spirit
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Enthusiastic participants make the Gatsby Day celebration in downtown Excelsior Springs happen, event organizer Crystal Keeton says.
While poet Shannon Morgan shares her poem about a frog and a toad, Keeton surveys the Hall of Waters circle drive, where the day is centered.
“This is to celebrate the 1920s, as well as raise awareness for the fine arts,” Keeton says.
Referencing the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel “The Great Gatsby,” Gatsby Day participants’ costumes replicate the 1920s period of the book and a time of tremendous growth and prosperity in Excelsior Springs.
The day has been chilly, with a feisty wind, but fun for participants, Keeton says.
“Everybody’s come out. They’re really enjoying the poetry reading, the art show and the jazz band will be performing soon,” she says.
