Wyman enters Phase I asbestos, lead paint survey

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – A Phase I screening of the Wyman School for lead paint and asbestos is underway, Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy told city leaders during a June 18 work session. “You do those when you anticipate you might have a developer,” Mehaffy said. “We’re hoping to have a developer and (are) wanting to know just what we’re dealing with.” Mehaffy’s comments followed a meeting a few days earlier with real estate developers. They told her that “the cleanup would be significant,” she said. Mehaffy also said the city seeks Missouri Department of Natural Resources assistance in conducting asbestos and lead paint screenings of Wyman and the remainder of the partially demolished Royal Hotel. The DNR opted not to consider the city’s request for the Hall of Waters, Mehaffy said. “They’ve said, ‘You know, we really have got everything we need in our Phase I for the Hall of Waters,’” she said....
