Funny how looking at a schedule will evoke memories – however hazy those memories might be. About two weeks ago, I visited the Missouri State High School Activities Association website to see if the fall sports schedules had been posted for Excelsior Springs. As many of you know, the 2022-23 school year marks Excelsior Springs’ return to the Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference, a megaconference with four divisions. The Tigers are assigned to the Blue Division – or the Suburban Small Eight, as it will probably be called by The Examiner, the Jackson County newspaper where I was a free-lance sports reporter for 25 years. While scanning the Excelsior Springs varsity football schedule, one date stood out: Oct. 14 at Raytown South. Seeing Ray South on Excelsior Springs’ schedule took me back to the 1990s.
