OT victories help propel winning streak in boys soccer

The Tigers have survived a few close calls during their latest winning streak in varsity boys soccer. Entering Wednesday night’s meeting with visiting North Kansas City, Excelsior Springs had won four straight. The margin of victory in three of those wins was one goal, and two wins came in overtime, including Monday’s 2-1 road win over St. Joseph Central. The streak started Sept. 29 with a road win over Battle/Columbia Independent. It continued Oct. 3 with a 3-2 overtime win over visiting Grandview. Two costly mistakes against Grandview in the first half put the Tigers behind 2-0, but they came from behind late in the second half to tie it and force overtime. Sophomore Jake Zapata received a pass from junior Mason Wartner and scored in the 75th minute. Then, with 30 seconds left in regulation, Wartner finished a pass from senior Nolan Greim to tie it.
