Carol “Gurney” Sue (Reed) Pennington, 77, Liberty, passed away peacefully Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, at NorthCare Hospice House in North Kansas City Hospital.

Carol was born Dec. 20, 1947, in Pine Bluffs, Wyo. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Robert Pennington. Carol was the daughter of Ralph and Rosemary Reed, who also preceded her in death. In addition, she was preceded in death by her sister, Gayle Fagan of Greeneville, Tenn.; a loving nephew, Justin Fuller; and many other loved ones.

Carol is survived by her daughter, Sheila of Iowa; son, Shaine and his wife Donna of Rayville; and son, Cody and wife Tiffany of Kearney. She also leaves behind five grandchildren: Kirby, Danny, Colton, Madison and Morgan. Other survivors include her brother, Phil Reed and wife Carrie of Fargo, N.D.; brother, Olin David Reed of Cheyenne, Wyo.; and several other close family members.

In her younger years, she was a talented barrel racer and adored her horse named Tory. Carol was an extremely hard worker who worked on the family cattle ranch until her retirement. She also was a stay-at-home mom, and was active in her children’s and grandchildren’s activities.

She loved the outdoors and trout fishing in the mountains of Wyoming. The last couple years of her life, she lived at the Wellington Senior Living facility in Liberty with her dog Foxy, where she made several friends. Carol did not know a stranger and was dearly loved by so many people.

A visitation will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, with a service immediately following at 3:30, at Hidden Valley Funeral Home, located at 5951 Missouri Highway 10 in Excelsior Springs. Another service will be held at a later time at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, located at 20109 Business Missouri Highway 13, Higginsville, where her ashes will be housed together with her husband Robert.
