Smith guides students toward skilled careers

As fewer young people enter the trades, one Excelsior Springs Area Career Center (ESACC) teacher is making an effort to show a handson career can be rewarding.Carpentry and construction instructor Bronson Smith is helping students at the Career Center find purpose in the work they build from the ground up.Smith is now in his fourth year of teaching at ESACC. After working in the trades for years, he decided to shift his focus to helping the next generation access the same opportunities that shaped his own career.“I felt I could do more good by helping the younger generation learn the trades,” said Smith.Smith was raised in Independence and graduated from Fort Osage High School, where he first developed an interest in woodworking.Following high school, he attended Central Missouri State University but noted his most valuable lessons came from firsthand experience.“Most of my training came from real-life experiences work...
