SAFE spotlights power of mentoring
The life-changing impact of one-on-one mentorship took center stage as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City shared stories of connection, growth and potential now taking shape in Excelsior Springs.
The presentation was part of a recent meeting of Excelsior Springs Substance Abuse Free Environments (SAFE), where coalition members learned how the evidence-based program is helping youth build resilience and stability through consistent, supportive relationships. The session took place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Excelsior Springs Hospital.
Milca Aguirre, a Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member and longtime volunteer, spoke about how simple acts of mentorship can change a young person’s path.
“I’ve been with Big Brothers Big Sisters for three years now, but I’ve been a big sister for five years,” said Aguirre. “My current little and I are about to hit our three-year anniversary in December. I really love the program and know how impactful it can be in the life of a young person.”
