City expands energy response participation
Excelsior Springs officials recently approved an expanded energy demand response agreement, allowing the city to earn revenue year-round by reducing strain on the power grid during peak-demand periods.The Excelsior Springs City Council approved the agreement during a recent meeting, along with several other infrastructure and operational items.The agreement allows the city to participate in a demand response program with Enel X North America Inc., under which operations at the wastewater treatment plant are shifted from the electrical grid to on-site generators during periods of high energy demand.“This is a renewal agreement with Enel X in which they pay us during peak energy use times to switch to emergency power from our generator at the wastewater treatment plant,” said Public Works Director Chad Birdsong. “This program is designed to reduce blackouts during high energy usage periods by switching to emergency back-up power instead of s...
