Excelsior Springs Substance Abuse Free Environments (SAFE) members were recently introduced to a framework encouraging communities to consider health impacts when making policy decisions.The program, titled “Health in All Policies,” was presented by Lauren Crome, a health policy analyst with the Clay County Public Health Center, and outlined ways social, economic and environmental conditions can shape health outcomes across a community.Crome told attendees the approach looks beyond medical care and individual behavior to examine the broader conditions that influence whether people are able to be healthy in the first place.“About half of the factors that drive our health are social and economic factors and our physical environment,” said Crome. “That 50% kind of shapes what’s possible for the other 50%.”She explained factors such as access to jobs, stable income, safe neighborhoods, parks and transportation systems can determ...
