City approves increased jail housing deal

A new detainee housing agreement between Excelsior Springs and the county will more than double the daily cost of housing municipal inmates at the Clay County Detention Center.Excelsior Springs City Council approved the agreement during a recent meeting after the Clay County Sheriff’s Office terminated the previous municipal housing memorandum with the Excelsior Springs Police Department. According to Police Chief Gregory Dull, the previous rate for housing detainees was $59.34 per day, while the new agreement increases the cost to $150 per day. The proposal also introduces additional charges for 24-hour holds, segregated detainee housing and time spent seeking off-site medical care.Additionally, under the memorandum of understanding with the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, municipalities retain discretion over a four-hour bond holding period before transporting detainees to the county detention center.
