Katherine “Kathie” Duncan, a beloved wife, mother, nana, sister and friend, peacefully departed this life on May 1, 2026, surrounded by the love and warmth of her family. She was 77.

Born Oct. 1, 1948, to Charles and Evelyn Peebles, Kathie’s life was a testament to love, resilience and enduring kindness.

Growing up in Excelsior Springs, Kathie was the kind of person who lit up a room with her beautiful smile and kind heart, qualities she carried with her throughout her life.

She graduated in 1966 from Excelsior Springs High School, and it was during her formative years that she met the love of her life, Donnie Duncan. Their love story began when they were just sophomores in high school, blossoming into a lifelong partnership.

Kathie and Donnie were married on July 14, 1967. Their union endured for 58 blissful years – a testament to their unwavering commitment and shared dreams.

Kathie found immense joy in tending to her garden, where her beloved flowers – especially the tall purple phlox, affectionately known as “Uncle Bill’s flowers” – were a source of beauty and serenity. Her garden was more than just a collection of plants; it was a sanctuary where she nurtured life and found peace.

A creative spirit, Kathie was often the muse and steadfast assistant to Donnie’s woodworking projects. Together, they crafted pieces filled with love, ensuring every creation was shared with family, exemplifying Kathie’s generous and hardworking nature. She never shied away from hard work, her hands and heart always ready to support her family in every possible way.

Kathie’s greatest joy in life was her family. She was the heart of their gatherings, whether it was sharing meals, planning family vacations at the beach or celebrating holidays and special occasions. Her presence was a comforting constant, her love a gentle guide. To her family, she was more than just a mother or nana; she was their biggest cheerleader, their source of comfort and their unwavering supporter. Her legacy of kindness, fierce loyalty and joyful spirit lives on in her children and grandchildren, who carry forward her values and love.

Kathie is survived by her devoted husband Donnie; loving daughter, Shelly Schmidt, and her husband Doug; and cherished son, Jeff Duncan, and his wife Carmen. She also leaves behind her dear sisters, Sandy Simmons and her husband Dave, and Sherry Patterson and her husband Pat; and caring brothers, Chuck Peebles and Scott Peebles.

Kathie’s legacy extends to her adored grandchildren, Heather Wiedemann and her husband Mitchell, Kelsey Kuntz and her husband Andrew, Logan Schmidt and his wife Kate, and Brianna and Dylan Duncan. She also was blessed with great-grandchildren Noah, Dean, Ada Katherine, Oakley and Knox.

Preceding Kathie in death were her beloved parents, Charles and Evelyn Peebles; sister, Diane Headlee; and brothers Frank, Kevin and John.

Kathie Duncan’s life was a beautiful journey of love, strength and grace. Her spirit will forever illuminate the hearts of those who were fortunate to know her. As we say goodbye, we remember her with love and gratitude, holding her close in our hearts.

In honor of Kathie’s courageous battle with Alzheimer’s, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Luminary Hospice; 9200 Ward Parkway, No. 320; Kansas City, MO 64114. The organization is dedicated to supporting those affected by the disease. Donations also may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs; 1650 Rainbow Blvd.; Excelsior Springs, MO 64024.

Services will be held Saturday, May 9, at the United Methodist Church of Excelsior Springs. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m., with the funeral to begin at 11.
