Coach bids farewell to daughter, other seniors with loss

For Excelsior Springs varsity volleyball coach Cindy Price, the Tigers’ 3-1 loss to Odessa Oct. 23 in the Class 3 District 15 Tournament marked the last time she got to coach this season’s corps of seniors.

That corps included her daughter Jordin. “Just being up close and having a front-row seat to all of the things has been fantastic for me personally,” Cindy Price said minutes after the defeat at Excelsior Springs in the single-elimination, postseason tournament.

The veteran coach knows what it’s like to play for a parent. In high school at Savannah, her tennis coach was her dad, Tom Lewis, she recalled.

“I don’t know that I appreciated it in the moment,” she said. “But looking back on it, I really appreciated him and his guidance. And I’m hoping that’s what Jordin’s able to look back on.”

Excelsior Springs (10-18-1) fought to give the mother-daughter combo one more match together. After dropping the first set 25-12 and the second 25-16, the Tigers took the third set 25-21. Trailing 18-1…
