Excelsior Springs won the time of possession.

Smithville, however, won the ballgame. Despite possessing the football nearly four minutes longer than Smithville, the Tigers tumbled 42-7 in Week 5 of the varsity 11-man season to the visiting Warriors. The defeat dropped Excelsior Springs to 1-4 overall entering Friday night’s homecoming meeting with Raytown South.

The Warriors (4-1 overall) took control of the Sept. 27 Greater Kansas City Suburban Conference-Blue Division showdown by building a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Taking over on downs at the Smithville 28-yard line midway through the second quarter, the Tigers staged an eight-play scoring drive, capped by Marquez McCant’s touchdown and Carson Gholson’s extra-point kick.

Smithville answered with a 54-yard, second-quarter TD pass and an extra point. The Warriors then added 14 third-quarter points and finished the scoring with a 6-yard, fourth-quarter TD run and point after.
