Excelsior Springs resident Vernon King, a Purple Heart recipient, was one of several recipients recognized for their service to the United States during the VFW’s Memorial Day celebration Monday. King is said to have driven a tank through the Battle of the Bulge.
The Excelsior Springs Elks Lodge 1001 and lodge members Gary Wayne Ballinger, Exalted Ruler Bob Ballinger and Joe Bailey placed over 500 flags in memory of fallen soldiers throughout Excelsior Springs’ five cemeteries. After several hours, the men had canvassed Excelsior and paid respect to each soldier laid to rest within the community.
