History of Buffalo Soldiers presented at Watkins Mill
More than a century after the Buffalo Soldiers first served on the western frontier, historians continue working to preserve the stories of the men and women connected to their legacy.
Visitors recently had an opportunity to learn more about that history during a Buffalo Soldiers presentation at Watkins Mill State Historic Site. Hosted in partnership with Missouri Humanities and members of the Greater Kansas City-Leavenworth Area Chapter of the 9th and 10th (Horse) Cavalry Association, the program explored the origins of the Buffalo Soldiers, Missouri’s role in Black military history and the lasting impact of those who served. Additional historical portrayals highlighted the lives of Sgt. Maj. Robinson Robbins, Cathy Williams and Private Samuel Reed. See page 9 for more on these historical figures.
Watkins Mill Assistant Superintendent Kirk Decker explained the presentation is part of an ongoing effort to share stories beyond those traditionally associated with the historic site.
