Early Friday morning the Excelsior Springs Police Department and first responders received an emergency call from Rexam, an industrial plant located behind Price Chopper in the 1700 block of Johnson Industrial Drive. The caller reported an injury which had been caused by a 20,000-pound door that had fallen on two of the company’s workers.
Upon arrival the ESPD, fire department and ambulance crews learned that it was not a door that had fallen but determined that it was a 6,000-pound crane that had been attached to the ceiling by an I-beam and landed on top of two of Rexam’s workers.
The man who was killed in the accident was later identified as Robert P. Walker, 55, Excelsior Springs. The injured man has not been identified yet; in an interview with the media, ESPD Lieutenant Clint Reno said he was 51 years old. His condition is not known, but it is believed that he will recover.
