School meal prices increase amid funding challenges

Paid breakfast and lunch prices will increase by 25 cents for Excelsior Springs students next school year as district officials work to offset rising food service costs and reduced federal revenue.

The Excelsior Springs Board of Education approved the increase during a recent meeting, raising student breakfast prices to $2.20 and lunch prices to $3.05 at the high school, $2.95 at the middle school and $2.85 at elementary schools. Adult breakfast will cost $2.90 and adult lunch will cost $3.95, while milk will remain 75 cents.

Reduced-price meal costs, which are set by the federal government, will remain unchanged at 30 cents for breakfast and 40 cents for lunch.

Assistant Superintendent of Operations Scott Guilkey said the increase is intended to help offset rising costs under the district’s food service contract with Aramark and reduced federal food service revenue while allowing the program to continue operating without a projected deficit.
