Roger Hurtubise Jr.

Roger Lea Hurtubise Jr. passed away peacefully in his sleep on Jan. 20, 2023. He was born on Jan. 5, 1960, in Versailles to Roger Hurtubise Sr. and Marian Willis Hurtubise. He graduated in 1978 from Excelsior Springs High School, where he met his future wife, Catherine Foote. They would later marry on April 25, 1981. Roger leaves behind Cathy, his wife of 41 years; his son, Roger Lea III; and his two sisters, Alicia Cunningham (Vince, Centerview) and Virginia “Ginny” Murray (Ray, Kansas City). He also leaves behind four nephews, Jeff Foote, Daniel Foster, Kyle Foster and Chris Cunningham; one niece, Emily Murray; six aunts, Margret Simmers, Susie Thompson and Kaye Dowell on his mother’s side, and Patricia Pope, Phebe Avery and Mary Jane Starke on his father’s.

He was preceded in death by his parents – his father in 1991, and his mother in 2022.

On Aug. 11, 2021, he retired from working at Dragon Distributing after 42 years. He played numerous sports growing up. He also coached a softball team for the Elks Lodge, where he was a fixture every Thursday night calling bingo.

He loved tinkering with and showing cars. He was a member of Goodguys and HPAC MOPAR, and attended multiple shows and cruises during the summer. There, he met a lot of friends that he had for years.

He also enjoyed collecting coins. He would say the true value they held was the history they had.

A Shooting Star maniac and a member of Max Floyd’s Rock and Roll Army, he loved attending concerts that he’d attend with his youngest sister and son. He enjoyed all genres of music.

Later in life, he developed a love of the English Premier League, with the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club being his favorite.

Roger will be missed by all who knew him, especially his family and friends.

Memorial visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at Bross & Spidle Funeral Home in Excelsior Springs.
