Early leads slipped away from Excelsior Springs in its 93-26 season-ending loss to Kansas City Central in varsity boys basketball.The Tigers took a 3-0 lead in the March 3 meeting in the Class 4 District 15 Tournament at St. Pius X High School, courtesy of a trey from by junior Marquez McCant. The Blue Eagles knotted it at 3 with a free throw and a two-point transition bucket off an Excelsior Springs turnover.Senior Cole Rhine’s layup made it 5-3 Tigers. Kansas City Central tied it again with another transition bucket. Rhine sank a free throw to give the Tigers their final lead (6-5).After that, it was all Kansas City Central.The Blue Eagles ripped off a 23-3 run to take a 28-9 lead into the second quarter. They then opened that second quarter with 10 unanswered points. A bucket by Rhine with 5 minutes, 23 seconds remaining ended their string.
