Excelsior Springs coach Cindy Price’svolleyballers have something extra to practice and play for this season: the program’s Captain of the Week award.“This is new this year,” Price said Monday in the high school gym as her girls helped Excelsior Springs kick off fall sports practices. “And it’s just our way to recognize the girls who are being good teammates, putting in effort, being motivational to their teammates.”Each award recipient will assume some duties during practices, Price said. The honorees also will be charged with taking care of a stuffed toy cow named Bessy for the week. The spelling of the toy’s name is stylized as B-e-S-S-y, Price said.“There’s some significance there, but it’s just more of a team joke,” she said.Price attributed assistant coach Terri Irons with establishing the honor.
