Jury returns verdict in killing of Officer Vasquez
For the first time in about 30 years, a Clay County jury has handed down a death sentence, according to Clay County Prosecutor’s Office Communication Specialist Cher Congour.The decision came after jurors found 28-year-old Joshua T. Rocha guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the 2022 killing of North Kansas City Police Department Officer DanielVasquez.Following the guilty verdict on Oct. 2, the same jury determined Rocha should receive the death penalty rather than life in prison without parole.“We are grateful to the jury for seeing through any attempts to justify the unjustifiable,” said Clay County Prosecutor Zachary Thompson. “Officer Vasquez’s family, his fellow officers and our entire community deserve nothing less than complete justice.”The case stemmed from a July 19, 2022, traffic stop at 21st Avenue and Clay Street, which...
