For over a year, nearby residents pleaded with Mosby officials to stop underground mining from expanding beneath the area. Instead, city leaders voted to formally add it to the city’s zoning regulations — unanimously.

An amendment to Section 400.130 of Mosby’s zoning regulations received approval from the Board of Aldermen at a recent meeting, adding “underground mining and deep mining of materials including limestone” as permitted uses in the M3 heavy industrial district — after residents once again urged city leaders to reject the proposal.

The action followed a public hearing in which nearby residents again voiced concerns about blasting, vibrations, road conditions and a declining quality of life before the board ultimately approved the amendment.

Attorney Jim Bowers, representing the owners of the Ideker quarry, spoke in favor of the proposed amendment, explaining the company requested the change to formally incorporate underground mining into Mosby’s zoning regulations.
