Schools do their part for Haiti

Thousands of miles apart, Excelsior Springs’ elementary schools are doing what they can for those less fortunate in Haiti.
In just the past week, an abundant amount of toothbrushes, hand towels, soaps and other items have been collected at two of Excelsior Springs’ elementary schools.
These hygiene items and more were assembled into kits for survivors of the devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti, which hit Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Westview and Elkhorn schools both collected and put together kits but will be sending them to help aid Haiti two different ways.

ES voters reject new sales tax

A proposal to add a half-cent sales tax for economic development in Excelsior Springs went down to defeat Tuesday.
The unofficial tally for the vote was 223 in favor and 285 against. But Mayor Carolyn Schutte said the idea behind the taxnot to mention the need for itis not going away.
