The Excelsior Springs High School cheer squad spent the last week shaping up the future Tiger cheerleaders of Excelsior Springs and teaching Tiger spirit to the little ones during their annual Cheer Mini Clinic held June 17-20. Each year the ESHS cheer squad takes four days to host their Mini Clinic at the high school commons to take preschool through eighth grade students under their wings and show them what it’s like to be a cheerleader, yell leader and to have true Tiger spirit.
“The cheer squad taught the younger children several aspects of cheerleading,” said Tiger Cheer Coach Kristi Sharp. “Each group learned their own chants, cheers and practiced stunting.” When children sign up for Mini Clinic they are broken down into age groups and paired up with current ESHS cheerleaders, and each day are taught a variety of cheers and stunts that the cheerleaders have already learned from either cheer camps or from previous experience on the squad.
“Several parents complimented our high school cheerleaders saying that they did a wonderful job teaching their kids and made it fun each day,” said Sharp. At the conclusion of Mini Clinic, on June 20, the youth cheerleaders invited their friends and family members for a live performance of what they had learned over the week. Participants from Mini Clinic will also be invited back to perform prior to the start of the ESHS Tiger football team’s home game at Tiger Stadium on Sept. 20. Mini Clinic participants should wear their clinic T-shirts to the football game.
