As week seven for the Excelsior Springs High School Tiger football team came to a close and with a packed house of 2,500 fans, the Tigers captured their homecoming with a win against Grain Valley, 33-22. Bringing their season record to 4-3, it was a perfect night for football at Tiger Stadium.
“We were able to run the ball well tonight and had 393 yards rushing and four touchdowns on the ground,” said Head Tiger Football Coach Josh Buford. “For the first time this year we were able to actually control the line of scrimmage and we did a good job up front on both sides of the ball—which is what we talked about last week. We just continue to improve each week and tonight (Friday) is no different.”
Emotions ran high as the Tiger team dedicated the entire evening to fellow teammate Michael Raybourn, #77, who passed away last winter. Carrying his jersey on the field for the coin toss, the Tigers let Raybourn know the game was played for him.
The first of four TDs came with 3:39 left on the clock in the first quarter, with an Austin Creason pass completed to Brandon Lane for three yards to the Grain Valley zero. Creason’s kick was good and the scoreboard reflected 7-0 in the Tiger’s favor.
