Excelsior Springs Family Dentistry holds ribbon cutting

December 28, 2018—Excelsior Springs Family Dentistry began seeing patients in their new location after they cut the grand ribbon on Dec. 14.

ESFD’s practice began right here in Excelsior Springs, originally owned in 1974 by Dr. Nicholas L. Houk. In 1980, Houk moved the practice from the original office building to its latest location on Jesse James Road.  Dr. T. Scott Craven joined Houk’s practice in 2002 and later became a partner. For the following three years, they continued to serve clients from all over town and towns over, with a staff of only themselves, one hygienist and an office manager.

In 2005 Craven bought the practice from Houk, which led to Houk now becoming his partner. However, Houk took this opportunity to slowly begin cutting down his hours and lessening his own workload. These days Houk works three days a week.

Craven’s assistant, and ESFD staff member, Shannon Thompson said both Craven and Houk went to the University of Missouri for their undergraduate degrees and received their dental degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. Thompson said since moving to their new location at 196 S. McCleary Road, the improvements to everyday life at the office have improved in more ways than one.

“We expanded with hygienists as well as office staff to handle the incoming patients,” she said. “And then we had to hire assistants to assist the doctors.”

Their new location promises a series of improvements for not just the doctors, but for the employees who play a major hand in making sure daily functions run as smoothly as possible.

One of the main things that have improved with the new facility, said Thompson, involves the new sterilization area. When Craven joined the practice, Houk and Craven expanded into another section of the original office building, adding an additional sterilizing station to the one that pre-existed. Thompson said everything will now be in one area. The old office building included two lab areas, one belonging to Craven, the other to Houk.

“So, say someone came in and they were looking for a case for Dr. Houk, you had to make sure they went to the right place. Now it’s all in the same room,” Thompson said. “We have more storage, we can set all of our equipment up the way that we want to, and not just where there is a space available.”

The office now provides each doctor an  overflow room. They designed these rooms for cases such as when doctors run overtime with another client or in the rare case of an emergency. Overflow Rooms provide the doctors with a special area for such clients.

Thompson said Craven put in an equipment cleansing system known as HYDRA. She said it’s basically what others would call a dishwasher for instruments. For example, at the end of every day, staff must run their suction lines through with a solution. Prior to installing the HYDRA system, the staff members mixed their own solution in a bucket and ran them by hand. Craven installed the new system in every room, allowing staff the appreciated luxury of being able to simply connect their lines. That frees up time, said Thompson.

Excelsior Springs Family Dentistry opens Monday-Thursday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday.

WHERE IS THIS NEW LOCATION YOU WRITE ABOUT? LOTS OF INFORMATION BUT NO ADDRESS. YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU ASSUME? WE READERS DON’T KNOW WHERE THE NEW LOCATION IS. THAT IS AN IMPORTANT FACT YOU HAVE LEFT OUT OF THIS STORY.
