Softball bash to raise funds for neighboring family

Body
As Richmond resident Presley Minnick and her family fight for their lives battling a rare cancer, close friends and family are raising funds to help them through their journey. The “Striking Out Cancer for Presley” fundraiser will help raise monies needed for expenses incurred for the Minnick family’s move to Houston, Texas, which was necessary for Presley to receive the lifesaving treatments.

DO JUST ONE THING

Body
When packing a lunch to take to the office or for your kid to take to school, try this hack to keep your food chilled: Freeze a container of yogurt! You’ll have a yogurt “ice pack” to help keep the rest of your food cold, and your yogurt will stay cold until lunchtime. It’s the right type of ingredient to freeze; a juice container or thermos of water may work the same way, but it’s slow to thaw out. Dairy items (like yogurt) freeze hard but thaw quickly. So by the time you’re ready to eat, it’ll be the perfect creamy consistency.

Lessons from small-town journalism

Body
After spending quite a bit of time getting to know Ray County residents there are a few things I have learned about Richmond and surrounding towns as a journalist. A lot of people care deeply about where they live, where their children go to school and what is happening with small businesses.

Making better choices

Body
In everyday life, people are faced with moments to make a choice. Sometimes those choices can be as simple as what to drink, eat or decide where to go for a good cup of coffee.

It’s time to reflect on an awesome season

Body

With the all-star break approaching for Major League Baseball (MLB), I feel inspired to share some reflections about baseball. But not about MLB.

Rather, I feel inspired to reflect on Excelsior Springs High School baseball.

In the five weeks or so since I covered my last Excelsior Springs ballgame, my appreciation of the season I witnessed has grown. Following the Tigers on their journey to finishing third in the Class 4 state tournament is among the most amazing rides I’ve taken during my many years in sports journalism. Here were a few of the thrills:
