The Hardin-Central School District challenged the Orrick School District to a donation drive challenge. Although Hardin-Central School District Superintendent Trey Cavanah said there were no winners due to the number of items donated, nearly $800 was raised and 800 items were donated, he said.

Before and during the basketball game last Friday, Hardin and Orrick’s residents donated money and items which included everything from coloring books and diapers to sports equipment.

“It was a joint effort in both communities,” said Cavanah.

The Interact Rotary Club, Orrick High School, Millville Church and Dalton’s Difference Foundation partnered with the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) in Kansas City. Dalton’s Difference Foundation was created by Kirk and Lisa Thacker in memory of their son, Dalton Thacker, a Hardin-Central student lost by suicide in 2020.

“The loss of our son prompted us to establish Dalton’s Difference. This should have been Dalton’s senior year. Our family is painfully missing out on many significant milestones and accomplishments,” said Lisa. “Serving other families who utilize the Ronald McDonald House allowed us to make a difference for families facing difficult medical situations while recognizing the importance of Dalton’s life and that he mattered to so many.”

Lisa said she felt an immense amount of love and support throughout the community, friends, families and businesses.

“This event definitely proved that Dalton is not forgotten,” she said.

According to the RMHC website, the charity assists families who have a child with illness by providing comfortable lodging conveniently located near local healthcare facilities, creating a caring and uplifting environment and undertaking resource and fund development activities that support its facilities, programs and services. “We are humbled by the generosity and donations. Thank you to those who participated in the worthy cause. We are looking forward to the future of it,” said Cavanah.

Rotary liaison to the Hardin-Central Interact Club, Troy Rust wanted to see the school pride and generosity of both communities.

“I attended and witnessed one of the largest crowds at a Hardin versus Orrick basketball game I have ever seen. As a matter of fact, I had to stand and watch the girl’s game, as there were no seats available,” he said. “The event was a great success and a good time was had by all.”

Orrick boys basketball assistant coach Tommy Burton said he was impressed to see the communities support each other and all for the same cause.
