Bill aims to aid home-based businesses

JEFFERSON CITY – Rep. Derek Grier has filed legislation to support home-based businesses in Missouri. House Bill 491 seeks to prohibit local governments from issuing “unreasonable and far-reaching regulations” against those operating businesses from home as the world adjusts to more people working from home because of the COVID 19 pandemic. Like the federal government infringing on state’s rights by requiring observance of certain regulations, the Republican-dominated General Assembly in the past couple of decades has acted to infringe on the rights of cities within the state in ways that include making sure cities cannot ban plastic grocery bags that fill landfills or raise the minimum wage. Regarding the wage issue, voters overrode legislators and required a new minimum wage increase – something lawmakers are seeking to slow.
