EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – Many students go hungry during a typical summer when they can no longer get food at school. The need is more acute now because many people are out of work due to the coronavirus. But food service employees are making sure that is not an issue in the Excelsior Springs School District. In preparation for food distribution by bus and through personal pickups Monday at one of the district’s preparation sites, Westview Elementary School, kitchen manager Lori Shumate, Stacey Robeson and Jaclyn Stout filled bags with food to last either three or four days. “Thursdays, we hand out for four days, and Mondays we hand out for three days,” Shumate said. On Monday, the staff prepared 1,560 breakfasts and lunches for 260 youngsters, she said. The students received cereal, fruit, vegetables, snacks, a sandwich, milk and juice.
