City OKs FD concrete replacement

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – On March 7, the City Council approved Fire Chief Joe Maddick’s request for $95,620 to replace the fire station’s concrete apron. The City Council’s approval while meeting at the Hall of Waters followed the Capital Improvements Authority’s approval Feb. 14, Maddick said. The authority earmarked $100,000 for the project, he said. Public Works Director Chad Birdsong estimated the project will cover “about 9,400 square feet” of concrete. “That doesn’t count the curbs – about 270 feet a curb,” Birdsong said. The concrete aprons have developed significant cracks since station construction in the mid-1990s, Maddick stated in a letter sent to city leaders and reiterated before the council voted. In addition, outriggers from the department’s ladder truck have indented the concrete, he said. “I’m not saying it will be, but it could potentially be a catastrophic event, if one of those areas would sink … (farther) while the ladder truck was fully up and extended,” Maddick…
