Clay County deputies embrace healthier future
One year after launching a groundbreaking in-house wellness program, the Clay County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) is transforming the way law enforcement approaches health, with results that go beyond the scale.Since the program’s creation, more than 40 employees have lost a combined 872 pounds. Some participants reversed diabetes and others eliminated the need for blood pressure medication. Three were categorized as having been “saved from the dead at 57 pool,” a phrase used by Wellness Coordinator Kevin Murray to describe the life-threatening statistic that helped inspire the program in the first place.“An FBI study on police officer longevity discovered that roughly half of all US police officers will die at the average age of 57 due to poor physical health,” explained Murray. “I started using the Dead at 57 Pool as a collective term for that half of all police officers.
