County celebrates its bicentennial June 4

LIBERTY – Bubbles, music and rain filled the air around the Clay County Courthouse June 4 during the county’s 200th birthday celebration. The scattered showers did not sway hundreds of people from attending the event, hosted by the Clay County Bicentennial Commission and Historic Downtown Liberty Inc. The festivities included live music by the Clay County Museum’s Bluegrass Band, family fun and games, face painting, frozen treats, performances from the StoneLion Puppet Theatre and a sky full of bubbles, provided by Bubble Magic KC. Presiding Commissioner Jerry Nolte addressed the crowd during the unveiling of the 1972 time capsule ceremony. “This is a significant year for Clay County. Not only is it our bicentennial. We have a new constitution, which will be fully implemented by the end of this year. We are expanding our commission from three to seven.
