The YMCA drew more than 160 players and volunteers to the greens this year, turning a summer golf tournament into a major fundraiser for the Challenger program. With games on every hole, a live auction and a fireworks show capping off the evening, the annual event raised more than $23,000 to help families and athletes with disabilities.Volunteer Josh Thomas noted the day carried on a tradition that has grown far beyond what organizers once imagined.“This is our 27th year and we had 36 teams,” said Thomas. “Our first year, we had six teams and were pretty much just getting together to have fun.”The growth of the event has been matched by the support it generates for Challenger athletes. Over the years, the tournament has raised more than $200,000.
