Council approves Wyman power plant demo bid

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – An old power plant is about to disappear from a historic site. On June 6, the City Council approved a $24,400 bid by Dehn Demolition of Independence to level the plant, located in the 100 block of Dunbar sitting southwest of the Wyman building. Demolition is slated to begin in June, Economic Development Director Melinda Mehaffy stated in a May 26 demo to city leaders. “It will take, I believe, 75 days for that demolition to be complete,” Mehaffy told city leaders. As Mehaffy stated in the memo and reiterated before the vote, the plant is on the Wyman School grounds. Built during the 1910s, Wyman is on the National Register of Historic Places. Based on data from the registration paperwork filed in 2008 with the National Register, the power plant is 109 years old.
