Council honors coach, passes STR ordinance

The Excelsior Springs City Council recognized retired high school coach John Shepherd by designating Leavenworth Street as Honorary Coach John Shepherd Way. Furthermore, the council adopted a new ordinance regarding short-term rentals previously agreed upon between city staff and the Excelsior Springs Planning and Zoning Board. According to Mayor Mark Spohn, Shepherd graduated from William Jewell College in 1959, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in education before moving to Excelsior Springs and becoming a coach and educator. “He taught in Excelsior Springs for 39 years,” Sphon said. “Including becoming a vice principal at Lewis Middle School when Greg Williams was a teacher.” During his expedition as an educator, Shepherd was the head basketball coach working with Ed Bush and later became an assistant football coach working alongside Vic Bonuchi.
