JEFFERSON CITY – The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, or DHSS, reminds Missourians the battle against COVID-19 continues. In Ray County over the past four weeks, the death toll has risen from 26 to 28 people, the county health department reported. Clay County reported 322 dead, up by 10 over the past six weeks. The highly transmissible Delta variant is projected to become dominant worldwide and is likely already the dominant variant in Missouri, the DHSS reported. Delta is causing more serious illnesses and hospitalizations among those who have not been vaccinated. Delta is 60% more transmissible than the Alpha variant. Delta’s primary target is unvaccinated people. Data show vaccines are nearly 90% effective against symptomatic disease. The vaccine protects recipients and those near them.
