EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The Tigers could not play a scheduled football game Friday against Center High School of Kansas City because of COVID-19. The virus is affecting all district schools. Excelsior Springs Deputy Superintendent Jaret Tomlinson said the virus resulted in infected and “close contact” isolation requirements for too many football players. “They were only going to be able to dress like 20 kids and they weren’t able even to fill all the positions on the team. It was just too much,” Tomlinson said a few hours before the game would have been played Sept. 17. The virus sidelined more than twothirds of the 72-member team. “It’s a combination of kids who did test positive and then other kids who were deemed close contacts and had to quarantine,” Tomlinson said. COVID cases within the district are not limited to the football team, he said. “We’re seeing increases throughout our district, so it’s having an impact in multiple places, Tomlinson said.
