ESFD requests funding for training facility

Fire Chief Joe Maddick recently asked the Excelsior Springs Capital Improvements and Trans Trust Authority board for $200,000. His goal is to construct an on-site training facility for local firefighters, police officers, and other local communities so that first responders can gain real-life training. After some pushback by board members, the training facility request was approved. Maddick explained that the new facility would be constructed in the spring 2024 to train firefighters for light fire burns, high-angle rescue situations, vehicle, propane and liquid gas fire simulations, extractions and trench rescue simulations. “Currently, we have no place to train,” Maddick said. “Once a year, we will go to the Career Center and train in their facility, but it’s not convenient as we take our equipment there.” He noted that two years ago, while using the Career Center for training, the firemen received a call to go across town for a structure fire.
