Excelsior Springs graduation slated to occur May 14
EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – COVID-19 is not expected to force postponement of this year’s high school graduation ceremony, unlike in 2020.
Principal Christen Everett told the Board of Education a limited-attendance commencement is slated for May 14, weather permitting, with May 15 or 16 as alternate dates. Last year, the pandemic moved graduation from May to August.
Like 2020, the ceremony will take place outdoors, Everett said Feb. 8.
“Having it outdoors allows us to plan where students will be able to get the similar amount of tickets that they normally do (for events). … Nobody really knows what the county restrictions will be, come May, in terms of those indoor events,” she said.
Outdoor staging worked well in 2020, Everett said.
“We’re going to be able to tweak it,” she said. “We’ll be able to do the march in this year, we think, with some distancing protocols.”
Another tweak will involve putting the stage in one of the end zones at Tiger Stadium, rather than at midfield.
