Rarely do 10-year-olds think of charity, particularly on their birthday. Austyn Filley is an exception to that rule. This past month, Austyn Filley and her mother, Joni Filley, came up with things to do for her birthday. “We were going through lists of things to do for a birthday. We came across donating to an organization – an animal shelter,” the youngster said. “At first, I thought of (the animal shelter) as a mean place because I (had) watched way too many movies that weren’t really nice to the animals. It made me believe that in real life, too. I realized it was just a movie, so it wasn’t actually happening in real life,” she added. Instead of gifts, the girl’s birthday wish was for food and supplies for the sheltered animals in Excelsior Springs. She received such items as bags of cat and dog food, toys and cat-huts.
