Fishing River Watershed Study goals revisited

The Fishing River Watershed Study coordinated by the city of Excelsior Springs is inviting community members to its upcoming meeting. The Fishing River Watershed Study’s next meeting is scheduled for March 7 from 6-8 p.m. at the Excelsior Springs Museum on E. Broadway. Fishing River Watershed Study project manager Laurie Brown began the meeting full of community members with an overview of specific flooding issues in September 2022. Excelsior Springs has “chronic flooding downtown, stream bank instability, inadequate bridge and culvert openings, highly constrained floodplains, overland flooding from adjacent hillsides; and the flooding is threatening to life, property and infrastructure,” Brown said. The goals of the study include identifying and reducing the frequency and severity of flooding; protecting downtown properties, businesses and infrastructures; and protecting and enhancing the community ecologically.
