EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The municipal airport’s north hangar will get a makeover and an occupant.

On Dec. 20 at the Hall of Waters, the City Council approved Generational Buildings LLC of Jamesport’s nearly $49,000 bid. The revamped hangar will become the Excelsior Springs Golf Course’s maintenance building.

Course Superintendent Frank Conrick told city leaders relocating “is warranted and justified.” “Our current facility is in great need of renovation,”

“Our current facility is in great need of renovation,” Conrick stated in city documents. “Relocating to the airport not only satisfies the need for the golf course but will give permanent residency and responsibility of upkeep to a city property also in need of care and upkeep.”

The city has struggled with airport-related issues that include finding a permanent resident, City Manager Molly McGovern stated in a Nov. 10 memo to city leaders.

“We have solicited … (pilots’) interest in leasing a new hangar to be constructed at the airport with inadequate response to move forward,” McGovern wrote. “We have solicited proposals for the purchase or lease of airport grounds and/or facilities with no response that did not require the city to finance the proposal.”

After the city approached departments about filling hangar space and “providing a presence on site,” the golf course determined “a move to the northern most hangar can provide improved facilities for their maintenance operations,” McGovern wrote.
