JEFFERSON CITY – Most Americans want to mail in ballots at their convenience, rather than stand in sometimes long election lines on a day that could be inconvenient or a place that could be dangerous, with the coronavirus continuing in Missouri. Rep. Peggy McGaugh, R-139th District, offered legislation to make voting easier for Missourians. No-excuse absentee voting has hung around the Capitol for years, Sen. Denny Hoskins, R-Warrensburg, said. The legislation has always faced opponents in the Republican-dominated General Assembly and among statewide officeholders, including Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, a Republican and Missouri’s chief election authority. “I would assume that bill would probably have a hard time getting through the Senate,” Hoskins said. Formerly Carroll County’s county clerk and chief election official, McGaugh pushes forward against the odds with her House bill 1065.
