Church, community unite to restock thinning food pantry shelves

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – To help their neighbors get enough to eat, people united to make donations at Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church, church member Sharon Senger said. The idea to collect food came from church member Gary Hinze. “He called me and said, ‘You know, these food pantries are running low because of the unemployment and the coronavirus, and everything that’s causing problems for families. So,’ he said, ‘we should do something to help these food pantries,’” Senger said. Church members spread the word to each other and to the community. “It wasn’t just our church. There were people in the community that also contributed. It was great,” Senger said. On April 21, everyone brought nonperishable food, paper products and other essentials for those in need to the Barbee Memorial Presbyterian Church parking lot. They packed the items into car trunks and hatchbacks to help replenish pantry shelves...
