Job Corps loses students; district loses funding

EXCELSIOR SPRINGS – The school district expects a slight uptick in Job Corps student enrollment within the next few months, Superintendent Travis Hux told district leaders Jan. 10 during the Board of Education meeting at the Support Services Center.
By school year’s end, the district expects 50 Job Corps students – up from roughly 36 now, Hux said.
“That’s a far cry from the … 350 or so that we’ve had in past years,” he said.
The drop influences daily attendance averages, Hux said, which is a concern because attendance average is “one of the metrics … for us to get paid,” he said.
Hux said steps are being taken to avoid the drop in state funding the district would experience after this school year because of less enrollment. One step is a drive to get parents and guardians to apply for free or reduced-price lunches for their children.
