Local doctor explains what to do when children get ill

Excelsior Springs Hospital pediatrician Dr. Joshua Umscheid knows this time of year is when children fall ill with upper respiratory illnesses, sometimes accompanied by a fever. He explained what parents can do to treat their symptoms and keep children comfortable when they are feeling under the weather. Umscheid, originally from Wichita, Kansas, completed his undergraduate degree at Kansas State University and pursued his medical degree at the University of Kansas Medical (KU Med) in Kansas City. He later began his medical residency in Wichita before moving to Louisville, Kentucky, to focus on nonoperative orthopedics. “I came back here to be closer to my family,” he said. “Excelsior Springs started talking about a pediatrics program, and I thought it was an awesome opportunity.” Now established in Excelsior Springs for the past year, Umscheid said he sees, on average, five or six sick children a day.
