Local investigation uncovers $97K gold scam, Texas man charged

A Texas man has been charged after investigators say he traveled to Excelsior Springs to pick up more than $97,000 in gold from a resident who had been targeted in an impersonation scam.Sai Praveen Kommana, 29, of Frisco, TX, is charged with first-degree financial exploitation of an elderly or disabled person.Kommana is being held on a $200,000 cash-only bond. Court documents show he must comply with standard conditions of release, including appearing in court as required, not committing any new offenses and having no contact with victims or witnesses. As of press time, no court date has been released. According to the complaint filed by Clay County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Garrison,Kommana is accused of knowingly obtaining control of gold bars valued at more than $75,000 by leading the victim to believe the assets were being transferred to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) for safekeeping.
